Main Purpose of the Job
To ensure the security and maintenance of Leighton House Museum and
its contents, welcoming visitors to the building and supporting the
activities of the museum and its staff.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Specific Duties
1. Security
Ensure the security of the building, its contents and collections as
instructed by the Senior Curator. Be responsible for securing the
building and enabling the intruder detection system. Act as a standby
key-holder for emergency purposes, admitting the emergency services of
authorised personnel as required.
Patrol all areas of Leighton House Museum regularly and carry out
security checks.
1. Health and Safety
Assist in enforcing the regulations made by the Council and its
insurers and ensure that all health and safety regulations are
fulfilled.
Undertake all necessary Health and Safety training.
Be familiar with all emergency evacuation procedures and the Museum’s
disaster plans. Be prepared to assist in the event of an emergency.
1. Visitor Services
Become familiar with the general history of the house and Lord
Leighton. Carry out reception duties, deal with visitor enquiries and
ensure that effective customer relations are maintained at all times.
Assist with informal tours of the historic house and servant’s areas.
Answer incoming calls to the museum’s main number and transfer to the
relevant staff. Check incoming e-mails and respond to enquires
regarding bookings for tours, activities and events.
Sell merchandise through the museum shop, operating the till and
credit card facilities as required, cashing up and completing all
necessary paperwork.
Input data onto computerised systems/records of visitor attendance at
the museum.
Assist with the setting up of equipment and resources for classes,
lectures, concerts and other events as instructed.
Be prepared to assist with opening the house and stewarding weekday
tours at 18 Stafford Terrace.
1. Care and handling of collections
Monitor environmental conditions and when necessary implement agreed
control measures.
Assist in unpacking and carrying exhibits for exhibitions; check and
accept delivery of goods.
Move furniture, art exhibits and other items as required by the Senior
Curator.
Assist with exhibitions as required by the Senior Curator, including
the erection and dismantling of displays and the couriering and
condition checking of the collection.
Be willing to assist the curatorial team with collections based
projects, such as documenting and photographing the collection.
1. General Maintenance and Cleaning
Check for repairs needed to the building and contents. Report
deficiencies to the Senior Museum Assistant. In the event of an
emergency, take action as required by the Council’s emergency
procedures. Assist the Senior Museum Assistant with the regular
testing of the museum’s equipment and systems.
Monitor the standards of cleaning for the building and forecourt.
Assist the conservation housekeeping team with conservation cleaning
and general repairs as required.
Deal with the operatives of other Council services, other public
services and contractors on the premises, accompanying them if
necessary and informing the Senior Museum Assistant of any work being
carried out in the house.
Ensure that the washrooms are in good order and stocked with necessary
supplies.
1. Miscellaneous
Wear the uniform provided by the Council, except when engaged in work
which requires the use of protective clothing, when the correct
clothing should be worn.
Undertake any other relevant and appropriate duties required by the
Senior Curator in respect of Leighton House, 18 Stafford Terrace and
the Transport Environment and Leisure service generally, providing
relief cover elsewhere within the service.
Technical and Job Specific Requirements
Essential Desirable
* Recent experience of operating a till and debit/credit facility,
selling merchandise/tickets, cash handling and record keeping
* Physically able to move, lift and carry furniture, equipment and
shop stock
* Ability to take responsibility for security and key holding
Essential Desirable
* Security work, ideally within a museum or comparable facility
* Knowledge of Victorian history/art/architecture
